Sunbonnet Sue or Holly Hobbie?

Occasionally I get an email asking for information on a pattern.  This was an interesting one:

Hi Kim - I just discovered your website and wondered if you might have any information on the following pattern? I have not be able to locate this pattern anywhere.

Several of these blocks were found in my mother-in-laws garage after she passed away several years ago. We thought they might be Holly Hobbie as they were intended for her granddaughter Holly. She looks more like Sue to me. Any information you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your time.

many thanks-
Laura

It did take me a while to find it, but this is a pattern that was designed by the famous Ginny Beyer.  Here is a copy of the 1975 article in Quilter's Newsletter Magazine:

This pattern was printed at the height of the Holly Hobbie craze, so the Sunbonnet Sue does look similar to Holly.   I love it when I can match a vintage block up with an pattern.  Even the embroidery flowers match in this one.  You have to love the 1970s vintage calico fabric too!
